Friends with "benefits"

My group and I worked on the project “Beyond the board”. It was our task to create a game with a technical enhancement. Since the core values of our media agency are bold, fresh and creative we decided to go for a board game that is bold and does stand out of the box. After iterating and brainstorming we came up with an 18+ party game called Friends with “benefits”.

Friends with “benefits” is a game to get to know your friends better in a funny way :) Each round there is a “chosen one” who has to pull a card with a question on it. All the questions have a series of answers you have to rank in the app from best to worst. The others have to guess the chosen one’s ranking. For every right answer you move a step forward. Each round there is a chosen one. First to the finish line wins!

The mascot of our game is Rick. Rick is a trash panda, because he is trash. He is cheeky and does everything that god forbids. You’ll see him everywhere in our marketing. The marketing is focused on a cheeky and fun vibe that is 18+.

Evidence

Situation

We struggled a bit with the brainstorming phase and ended up changing our concept twice before finding the perfect direction. This took some valuable time.

Task

Our goal was to create a good, functioning app with a strong and consistent marketing. I was mainly responsible for the marketing and design of the game. I’ve worked on the box, board, rulebook, rulebook video and web shop.

Action

After our concept was finalised, I focused on creating a strong visual identity and tone of voice. I applied my design consistently in everything that I’ve worked on including the box, board, mascot, rulebook, rulebook video and web shop with merchandise to create a strong marketing presence. I put a lot of effort into making the marketing memorable.

Result

We got a lot of positive feedback on the marketing, but also on the app. People said the marketing was cohesive and encouraged us to approach publishers. These compliments made me proud since the marketing and design was mostly my contribution.

Reflection

Although I’m happy with the outcome, it would have been nicer if everyone was involved more equally in the design process. I would have liked if we all combined our own ideas and research and make it into one, strong design. I strongly believe that the outcome would’ve been even better. Next time I will make an effort to collaborate more and ask other to add their insights to the design as well.
